When I write “paradise” I mean not only apple trees and golden women but also scorpions and tarantulas and flies, rattlesnakes and Gila monsters, sandstorms, volcanoes and earthquakes, bacteria and bear, cactus, yucca, bladderweed, ocotillo and mesquite, flash floods and quicksand, and yes – disease and death and the rotting of flesh.

~ Edward Abbey

These are the acquaintances I make. Somehow Рeven though they could not care less about me or my arrival in their world, beyond perhaps what threat any upright human like me may pose to them Рthey are some of the most reliable companions. There is comfort in how mesquite plans its growth, or how the tarantula spends every fall in search of love. The world out there has a far better day planner than do any of us.
